The Blessing of the New Cross Monument (Troiţa) at
Saints Peter & Paul Church
Dearborn Heights, Michigan
June 27, 2004

On Sunday, June 27, 2004, His Grace, Bishop IRINEU celebrated the Divine Liturgy at Saints Peter & Paul Church in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, in anticipation of the community's Patron Feast Day (June 29).  Seen here, His Grace offers the Holy Cross to V Rev Fr John Surducan, retired Priest Emeritus of Sts Peter & Paul, as the clergy greet the Bishop at the doors of the church prior to the beginning of the Liturgy.
Immediately following the Divine Liturgy, the clergy and faithful went around the church in procession to the new cross monument ("troiţa" in Romanian).
Assisting His Grace that day were Rev Fr Romey Rosco, parish priest; V Rev Fr John Surducan; Rev Fr Alexandru Partioc, attached; Rev Hierodeacon Sebastian (Dumitraşcu); Rev Dn Horaţiu Balanean, parish deacon; Rev Dn Sabin Pop; and Subdeacon John Bogdan.
"Send down on it your heavenly blessing and bless it, sanctify it and fill it with power and the blessing of the other Tree on which the most-holy Body of our Lord Jesus Christ, Your Only-begotten Son was nailed, by Whom the power of the Devil was trampled underfoot, and mortals received freedom and were counted worthy of life."
Perhaps the most characteristic expression of Romanian folk art and religious architecture, you will find these cross monuments throughout Romania - most commonly on the roadside, in cemeteries and in churchyards.  Originally, they began as small wooden crosses erected either in memory of an event on a particular spot or as a sign of religious piety and a place for prayer.  Over time, they became more ornate, taking many different styles and decoration as influenced by the artists creating them.  Regardless of shape, size, color or material, all represent the holy, precious and life-giving Cross of our Lord, Jesus Christ.
"This emblem of the Holy Cross is sanctified by the Grace of the Holy Spirit through the sprinkling of this Holy Water, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."
The parish choir leads the responses under the direction of its director, Theodore Vingarzan.
Bishop IRINEU censes the new monument.
"The Cross is the guardian of the universe; the Cross is the beauty of the Church; the Cross is the strength of kings; the Cross is the support of the faithful; the Cross is the glory of angels and the wounder of demons."
The monument was designed by Subdeacon Tom Rosco, and the entire cost of the project was donated by parishioner Viola Pirvu in memory of the deceased members of her family.
