The Funeral of the Mother and Grandmother of Bishop IRINEU

On November 25, 2004, Thanksgiving Day, His Grace, Bishop IRINEU learned of the sudden falling asleep in the Lord of his beloved mother and grandmother that day in Romania.  His Grace traveled to his hometown in Romania for the funeral services.

The Wake Service (Sărăcustă) was served on Saturday and Sunday evenings, November 27 and 28, in the family home where the deceased laid in state as family and friends came to pay their respects.

On Monday morning, November 29, 2004, the Funeral Service was held in the courtyard of the family home.  Here, Bishop IRINEU and his family greet the hierarchs as they arrive.
Hierarchs present and participating in the services were (L-R) His Grace PETRONIU, Auxiliary Bishop of Oradea; His Grace LAURENŢIU, Bishop of Caransebeş; His Eminence ANDREI, Archbishop of Alba Iulia; His Grace DANIIL, Auxiliary Bishop of Timişoara; and His Grace VASILE, Auxiliary Bishop of Cluj.
The family stands alongside the coffins.
His Grace, Bishop LAURENŢIU delivers a sermon.  Also delivering a sermon was His Eminence, Archbishop ANDREI.  Letters were then read from His Eminence, Archbishop NATHANIEL and other hierarchs unable to attend the funeral.
A choir of students from the Theological Institute in Alba Iulia led the responses.
More than 500 people attended the funeral in the small country village.

The clergy and faithful went in procession to the cemetery which is located next to the village church.
On the way, they stopped in front of the gate of the church for a Litany for the departed.
They then stopped at the front gate of the cemetery.
Amalia and Aurelia were then laid to rest in the family graves.
More than 350 people attended the memorial luncheon (pomană) at a banquet hall in Alba Iulia.  Many of the arrangements were made with the help of Rev Fr Liviu Alexandrescu of The Nativity of the Ever Virgin Mary Mission in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Seminarian Dan Hoarşte, who traveled to Romania to assist His Grace.
More than ten dozen floral arrangements sent by friends cover the graves.
